The Montgomery City Council has set a date for a special election to fill the District 3 seat vacated by Marche Johnson.
An announcement from the council set candidate qualifications for June 30 until July 14 at 5 p.m. The special election will be held on Sept. 1, with a runoff on Oct. 13 if necessary.
In a past meeting questions were brought up regarding Johnson's residency in the district that she represented.
A citizen claimed that she had purchased a home in District 7 and cited Alabama law saying that councilors must live in homes in their own districts for their entire term.
“The Council’s action today ensures that the citizens of District 3 will have the opportunity to select their next representative through a fair and transparent election process,” said Council President CC Calhoun. “We encourage interested candidates to qualify and ask all eligible voters to participate in the election.”
Anyone who is interested in applying can call the City Clerk's office at 334-625-2096.
