Remaining two escaped inmates captured at GWC Homes in Selma Wednesday

The remaining two Dallas County inmates who escaped from a Perry County facility in May were captured at GWC Homes Wednesday.

After a several-hours standoff, Marquavious Billingsley and Kevin Gunn were arrested around 5 p.m. Wednesday by a law enforcement task force, the US Marshals, Selma Police, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

The two men had barricaded inside an apartment at GWC Homes but were arrested without incident, interim Police Chief Michael Perry said.

Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum said investigators received information the day before that the men might be inside a specific apartment. When deputies and assisting agencies arrived, they found the unit occupied by a woman and several children.

“The owner of the house was a female resident and there were children in the house, but they were able to come out of the house fairly quickly,” Granthum said. “We had information that the two were in there. We did not know for sure, but the information we thought was good.”

When the inmates refused to come out of the apartment, officers deployed tear gas and pepper balls in an effort to force the men out, he said.

“After several hours, we were able to get a family member there and a family member got on our PA system and started talking to them. We think that helped ... because shortly after that both of them surrendered without force.”

Billingsley and Gunn were charged with escape and are being held without bond. Granthum said additional charges are expected because investigators believe members of the public helped the inmates remain hidden for several weeks.

“Neither one of them worked, so somebody had to facilitate them,” he said. “We already made three arrests with people obstructing government operations as far as harboring a fugitive and helping them escape. And I am sure there is going to be more.”

Granthum said the woman who lived in the apartment, identified as Jakalya Hill, has been charged with hindering prosecution for helping the escapees. She is being held in the Hale County Jail with no bond. A firearm was recovered inside the residence, which Granthum said belonged to Hill.

Granthum said investigators had been close to the escapees several times in recent weeks since the escape from the Perry County Correctional Facility on May 30, including one encounter in Montgomery.

“One of them had already destroyed his phone and that led us to believe that they knew,” he said. “We were real close to them a couple of times.”

Billingsley and Gunn escaped along with Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. and Jayden Maxwell.

Bush was arrested the next day in Midfield. Maxwell surrendered that night at Bloch Park in Selma.
