A "repeat criminal offender" in Montgomery County has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a man in 2021, said a recent announcement from county district attorney, Daryl Bailey.

According to Bailey's announcement, the convicted, Marquis Lequan Phillips, pled guilty to the murder of Dequan Johnson in February of 2021 before he was sentenced by Judge Jimmy Pool.

Bailey said that Montgomery police were alerted to a hotel on Express Drive near Troy Highway where a car had crashed and Johnson was found inside of it with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators identified Phillips and another suspect from the hotel surveillance footage, which reportedly showed them approaching the vehicle with Johnson inside and shooting into it.

They were later arrested by the United States Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force after a chase near Thomas Avenue in Montgomery, Bailey said.

Phillips' co-defendant, whose name was not mentioned by Bailey, is currently awaiting trial.

“Marquis Phillips deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering Dequan Johnson in cold blood," Bailey stated on social media. "However, it’s disheartening to know that we keep losing so many of our young people to these senseless murders."

"The gun violence that plagues our community is often committed by young men like Marquis Phillips who pointlessly throw their entire futures away because they don’t stop to think before they act.”
