A sergeant of the Montgomery Fire & Rescue (MFR) has retired after over 28 years on the job.

Raymond F. Keel, Jr. joined the department on May 28, 1998, said an announcement on social media.

"For more than 28 years, Ray faithfully served the citizens of Montgomery with professionalism, courage, and dedication. Spending much of his career assigned to Station 7 in the Cloverdale area, he became a respected and familiar presence throughout the west and south sides of our city," said the announcement.

He served as a firefighter and engine company sergeant during his time and was described as confident and calm as he led teams during emergency situations.

"Known as a fearless leader and one of the most dependable firefighters to ever wear the Montgomery Fire/Rescue patch, Ray earned the trust and respect of generations of firefighters," the announcement continued. "Whether responding to emergencies, mentoring younger members, or simply being someone others could count on, his impact on this department will be felt for years to come."
