Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed discussed public safety during a press conference that was held on Monday where he said that there was a downward trend in crime.

In 2025 there were 61 homicides, which was the same as 2024.

“That is not a win,” he said. “Every life lost is one too many. Life is sacred.”

Despite this he stated that there was still a noted improvement in the amount of violent and nonviolent crimes.

According to data there was a more than 25 percent decrease in violent crimes, 12 percent in nonviolent crimes, 15 in overall crime and 14 percent in non-fatal shootings.

Reed said that the data showed that the city was becoming safer, noting that officers seized more than 2,100 firearms, including 26 machine-gun conversion devices.

He later added that there has been "progress" under Envision Montgomery 2040, updating zoning rules to support housing choice and mixed-use development and securing major investments in transit, sidewalks, trails, and green space, among others.

“I’m proud of the momentum we’ve built,” Reed stated. “And I look forward to where that momentum will take Montgomery next.”
