Gavin Hewston, a senior at John T. Morgan Academy, will be going to Washington, D.C., in March to be part of the United States Senate Page Program.
Hewston earned the highest grades in his class in his junior and sophomore years at Morgan, and he has the school’s highest marks for reading on the ACT, a college prep exam, scoring a perfect score of 36. His cumulative score on the ACT is 31.
Hewston was recently celebrated for his academic achievements by the Selma City Council and for his upcoming visit to Washington, D.C., where he will meet with Alabama’s U.S. senators and the president. Hewston was also recognized by the Dallas County Commission on Monday.
After meeting with the city council, Hewston said one of his proudest achievements is serving as president of the Interact Club, a branch of Rotary Youth Programs and affiliated with the Rotary Club of Selma.
“The Interact Club works with city officials and with other schools to interact with our community and serve our community,” Hewston said. “We do things like clean up Bloch Park, or we work with other organizations like Rise & Recovery, a drug stigma ending organization.”
Hewston said that he has a passion for this kind of work and will pursue community and government relations further down the line. He wants to attend Tulane University to study political science and/or Wake Forest University to study international relations.
“I have a lot of interest [in] working directly with congress and with the department of state and other government organizations to ensure that our country’s interests are met, and our citizens’ interests are met, domestic and abroad,” Hewston said. “I’m honored to be chosen for this opportunity, to go to Washington. I’m very proud of my city, and I’m very proud to represent my city and Selma’s values, heritage and culture in Washington.”
