POLARIS, Mont. — Some Grasshopper Valley residents can head back to their properties on Aug. 17, 2026, as evacuation levels changed in parts of the fire area.

A Facebook post from the Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office said the Shale Creek and Clark Creek areas dropped to SET status. It also said people evacuated from the Billings Creeks area and farther south could return because those restrictions were lifted.

Areas above Clark Creek and Shale Creek stayed in GO status. The scenic byway also remained closed until further notice. [Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office]

The post included a clear warning for anyone trying to use that route.

"Do not attempt to take the by-way."

The sheriff's office also said law enforcement would keep a strong presence in the area for the next couple of weeks. It urged residents to watch official emergency notifications and follow directions from local authorities and fire personnel.

"Please use caution, remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate when directed."
