If you’re like many Americans, you can relate to that moment of panic when the doctor’s office quotes your total bill and you see the out-of-pocket impact.
Whether it’s an emergency that insurance won’t cover – 21% of adults reported having major unexpected medical expenses in the past year, according to the Federal Reserve’s Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2025 – an elective procedure that feels out of reach, or pet care, health and wellness costs for the entire family can be substantial.
Perhaps you can't afford it today, in one piece, without draining your emergency fund or putting it on a credit card that starts charging interest the day you swipe. But you can afford it, over the next year or so, out of your normal paychecks.
That gap between what a healthcare bill costs in a lump sum and what you can pay each month is what the CareCredit Credit Cardis built to solve. It's a health and wellness-specific credit card from Synchrony Bank, accepted at more than 290,000 provider and retail locations across the U.S. What sets it apart from a general-purpose credit card is the financing it can offer instantly.
If used well, the CareCredit card can help you save serious money in interest on your timely medical needs. Here’s how.
2 ways the CareCredit Credit Card can help you manage
CareCredit offers two ways to help you manage your payments on medical procedures, cosmetic treatments, dental work, vision care, vet bills and other out of pocket costs. They’re called ‘promotional financing’ offers, and which offers are available to you may vary based on your purchase amount.
- Option 1: Pay no interest if your balance is paid in full within 6, 12, 18 or 24 months on qualifying purchases of $200 or more.* Interest will be charged to your account from the purchase date if the promotional balance is not paid in full within the promotional period. Minimum monthly payments are required.
- Option 2: Reduced APR and Fixed Monthly Payments Required on qualified purchases. Terms for 24, 36 and 48 months may be available on purchases of $1,000 or more, and for 60 months on purchases of $2,500+.**
Option 2 is structured with predictability you don't always get from a standard credit card.
But Option 1, which allows you to pay $0 in interest charges when you pay in full within the agreed-to promotional period, it may be your best bet to manage your medical bills. However, it's important to pay off your promotional balance in full within the set timeframe.
Let’s say you charge $3,000 in dental work on the card with a 12-month special financing option. By the end of that time period, you’ve paid back the $3,000 in full and you owe $0 in interest.

But it’s important to note that this type of promotional financing works differently than a credit card with a 0% APR offer. If you still owe any part of the promotional balance once the promotional period ends, the entire amount of accrued interest, calculated back to the original purchase date, will be charged. The current purchase APR for new accounts runs around 30% — meaning that if you don’t pay back that $3,000 in full in the promotional period, you’ll have around $900 in interest to pay.
Two Nerdy habits can make CareCredit's “Option 1” promotional financing pay off for you:
- Divide the bill by the number of months in your promo period and treat that as your minimum payment. A $2,400 charge on a 12-month offer means at least $200 a month, ideally a bit more for cushion.
- Aim to finish a month early. A delayed payment, a processing hiccup, or a forgotten autopay can put you a few days behind the deadline. Wrapping up in month 11 takes that risk off the table entirely.
Nerdy Tip Check with your health and wellness provider to make sure you’re clear on which promotional financing options they offer. Promo financing options are not available at all retail locations that accept CareCredit.
Who the CareCredit credit card works well for
CareCredit shines when the expense is real, the timeline is clear, and the promotional financing has room to do its job. A few scenarios where it tends to be especially useful:
- Planning and budgeting ahead: You know LASIK is happening this spring, your kid is getting braces in the fall, or you've finally scheduled getting the crown you've been putting off. You have a date, a price, and a sense of what you can pay each month. CareCredit lets you slot that planned expense in and make monthly payments, instead of dipping into your savings.
- Pet parents in a bind: Vet bills can land in the four-figure range without warning, and many practices accept CareCredit specifically because it gives clients a path to "yes" on treatment. When your dog needs surgery on Tuesday, a promotional financing offer can be the difference between proceeding with confidence and scrambling.
- A household navigating a big-ticket procedure: Fertility treatments, dental implants, weight-loss surgery, hearing aids, cosmetic fillers – some expenses require their own financing plan. CareCredit's longer-term reduced APR financing is built for these instances. It offers reduced APR options with fixed monthly payments that sometimes stretch across several years, turning a procedure that felt out of reach into a manageable monthly number.
The CareCredit credit card could be even more rewarding (if you do this)
There are two versions of the CareCredit credit card, and how you apply can make a difference in determining which card you are approved for.
The standard version is accepted within a network of more than 290,000 health care provider and retail locations, and can also be used for eligible health and wellness purchases at retail locations including Walmart, Walgreens, Sam’s Club and others.
There’s also a Mastercard version of the CareCredit credit card that works the same in terms of financing. But this version can be used both in that healthcare provider network as well as anywhere else Mastercard is accepted.
The CareCredit Rewards Mastercard® earns rewards on everyday purchases. Earn points on purchases in these categories through 12/31/26.:

- 2 points per $1 spent everywhere else Mastercard is accepted outside of the CareCredit provider network.
You can redeem a minimum of 1,000 points (at a value of 1 cent each) toward a statement credit, travel, gift cards and merchandise. Earn rewards on everyday purchases that you can redeem as a statement credit toward your health and wellness procedure (or redeem for any other rewards available).
To be considered for the CareCredit Rewards Mastercard® , you must apply online, not over the phone. (Must be 18 or older to apply, must be 21 or older to apply by phone.) When you apply at carecredit.com, you’ll first be considered for the CareCredit Rewards Mastercard and then for the CareCredit credit card if you’re not eligible for the Mastercard version.
You can call and apply over the phone. Phone applications are only for the CareCredit credit card. Additionally, most enrolled practices and have the CareCredit application built into their payment system and you can apply for the card right there.
Is the CareCredit credit card worth it?
For many consumers facing large or unexpected medical bills, the CareCredit credit card can absolutely help ease the burden.
The card pays off when you treat its promotional financing like the structured plan it is: a window with a clear end date, a payment that clears the balance in time, and a finish line you cross with room to spare. Do those three things, and CareCredit can turn a daunting bill into convenient monthly payments that free you to say yes to the care that was recommended in the first place.
*No interest will be charged on the promo balance if you pay it off, in full, within the promo period. If you do not, interest will be charged on the promo balance from the purchase date. The required minimum monthly payments may or may not pay off the promo balance before the end of the promo period, depending on purchase amount, promo length and payment allocation. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases and, after promo period ends, to the promo balance. For New Accounts as of 5/30/2024: Purchase APR 32.99%. Penalty APR 39.99%. Min Interest Charge $2. CareCredit Mastercard: Cash APR 32.99% and 4% Fee ($10 min). Bal Trans APR 32.99% and 5% Fee ($5 min). Foreign Trans Fee 3%.

The fixed monthly payment will be rounded up to the next highest whole dollar and may be higher than the minimum payment that would be required if the purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. For New Accounts as of 5/30/2024: Purchase APR 32.99%. Penalty APR 39.99%. Min Interest Charge $2. CareCredit Mastercard: Cash APR 32.99% and 4% Fee ($10 min).
