Americans are going all out trying to find the perfect gift for Moms this year. A recent survey puts average Mother's Day spending at a record $284, up from $259 last year. Clearly, the bar is rising and a last minute candle no longer makes the cut.
Mother's Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 and now ranks among the longest-standing celebrations on the American calendar. More than a century later, it also ranks among the biggest shopping holidays of the year and the options have never been better.
I went on the hunt for Mother’s Day gifts that won't end up in the donation pile, and these made the cut.
Some items featured in this guide were provided as samples for editorial review; all opinions remain my own and are not influenced by brands.
The Splurge: For the Mom Who Has Everything
Honestly, this one is too fun not to include. It's a gift for the mom who grew up with Harry Potter and never quite got over it.
GoChess Wizard Harry Potter Edition
The GoChess Wizard Harry Potter Edition is part smart chess set, part collector's piece, and entirely worth the splurge. Every piece is modeled after the iconic Wizard's Chess from the films, complete with a stone-inspired finish and enough detail to make any fan do a double take. Built-in coaching guides strategy, light-up board illumination adds drama to every move, and a companion app connects players online or lets Mom challenge the board solo. It works as a serious game system and looks stunning on a shelf when no one is playing.
