Stunning images show the ancient Parthenon temple scaffolding-free for the first time in 200 years.

Visitors to the stone temple found in Athens, Greece, can finally enjoy a clear, scaffolding-free view of the first time in two centuries.

The removal of the latest iron cage - erected about 20 years ago on the temple’s western façade - happened earlier this month, revealing a clear view of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Greece’s culture minister Lina Mendoni said: “At least two generations have not seen the Parthenon visually free.

"To see the Parthenon completely free, as it stands today, is something that has not happened for at least 200 years.”

The accident monument was built in the 5th century BC on top of the Acropolis to honour Athena, the patron goddess of the city, following a victory over the Persians.

Though those wanting to see the temple have been urged to be quick as work continues on the historic structure next month with another set of scaffolds being constructed for further conservation.
