Dreaming of the French Riviera or Mykonos? You may not have to travel nearly that far. A new Booking.com travel trends report highlights the rise of “destination dupes”—places that deliver a similar vacation experience with better value and fewer crowds.
“Travelers are increasingly looking for destinations that deliver the same sense of charm and escape, but in a way that feels more accessible, less crowded and offers better value,” said Angela Cavis, director of communications for the Americas at Booking.com. “That’s why destination dupes are trending right now. They give people a chance to discover places that capture the feel of a dream getaway while offering an approachable experience closer to home.”
According to Booking.com’s 2026 Travel Predictions study, nearly two-thirds of U.S. travelers plan to vacation domestically this year, showing growing interest in exploring destinations closer to home.
It’s not just about avoiding crowds. Rising travel costs are also influencing where Americans vacation. AAA reports that airfare and hotel stays continue to be among the biggest expenses for vacationers, prompting many families to choose domestic destinations. For travelers who still want beautiful beaches, waterfront dining and postcard-worthy scenery, these domestic alternatives prove you don’t have to leave the country to enjoy an unforgettable coastal getaway.
Trade the Hamptons for Hilton Head Island
Think upscale waterfront dining, beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, but swap traffic jams and packed weekends for miles of shoreline, bike paths and charm.
The Hamptons have long been synonymous with upscale beach vacations, waterfront homes and elegant dining. But summer weekends can also mean bumper-to-bumper traffic and packed beaches.
