As spring break approaches, travelers face a 26% rise in costs compared to last year.

Recent data indicates that the average insured spring break trip will cost $8,306 in 2025, an increase from $6,125 in 2024 and 33% higher than in 2023. At the same time, airfare and hotel prices are increasing daily, and many students think twice about where and how they want to travel.

To help budget-conscious travelers get the most out of their spring break, we assessed destinations based on three key factors: affordability, accessibility, and popularity among the college crowd.

We prioritized destinations with affordable meals, accommodations, and activities, cities with low-cost airfare and easy transportation systems linking up to large U.S. cities, and places popular for nightlife and spring break events. We have also listed money-saving strategies while traveling for spring break.

Top Affordable Spring Break Destinations

South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is one of the U.S.'s most affordable spring break destinations and a hub for thousands of college students. Texas’ only tropical island is famous for its beach events and music festivals, with artists like Cardi B. South Padre is small enough to get around on foot, and there is a free public shuttle, Island Metro.

Hotel prices start from $150 per night, and round-trip flights to nearby Harlingen or Brownsville airports are usually less than $250.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas is a more affordable alternative to Cancún. Similarly, it has all-inclusive resorts, beach clubs, and outdoor activities — but at lower prices. It is a top choice for those looking for a fun and affordable international destination. It is also known for its student crowds and its lively nightlife.

A round-trip flight to Cabo San Lucas costs under $300. All-inclusive resorts start at $150 per night.

Daytona Beach, Florida

Daytona is a traditional spring break destination with students gathering from every corner of the U.S. It has lively nightlife, beautiful beaches, and seaside hotels at a fraction of the cost of Miami Beach.

Hotels are $100-$130 a night, less than half price compared to Miami.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Montego Bay is a less expensive tropical destination than The Bahamas. It has all-inclusive resorts that provide a single price for food, drinks, and entertainment.

Flights from major U.S. cities are $350-$450 round trip. Budget resorts start at $100 per night.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a fun alternative to beach vacations. It has a famous party atmosphere, live music, and Mardi Gras-style energy.

Hostels and vacation rentals start at $100 per night and make one of the cheapest spring break destinations.

Impact of Inflation on Travel Costs

Travel costs have slightly decreased in some areas compared to last year. However, they remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels.

According to the NerdWallet Travel Price Index, travel costs in December 2024 were 4% higher than in December 2023. Specifically, airfare was up 7.9%, hotel rates 2.3%, and rental prices fell 6.2%. However, compared to December 2019, hotel rates are up 19.1%, car rental prices 12.3%, and dining has increased a whopping 30.1%.

Money-Saving Tips

Book Early or Use Price Alerts

Flights and hotels for spring break are more expensive after mid-February — set price alerts on sites like Google Flights or Skyscanner to lock in lower rates before costs rise.

Fly Into Alternative Airports

Flying into smaller airports can be cheaper. For example, flights to Fort Lauderdale are usually cheaper than in Miami. Similarly, Tampa is a cheaper alternative to Orlando.

Opt for Group Stays

Renting a vacation home can be more affordable than booking separate hotel rooms. Additionally, many vacation rentals have a kitchen, so students can save on food costs.

Use Student Discounts

Websites like StudentUniverse or International Student Identity Card (ISIC) offer discounts to students on airfare and accommodation. Some hostels also offer special student rates, which can bring the cost down even further.

Leverage All-Inclusive Packages

All-inclusive resorts keep costs predictable by bundling food, drinks, and entertainment into one price, especially in international destinations. Many resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica offer early booking deals and all-inclusive packages.
