The new 483 area code overlay will take effect on Feb. 23, 2026 for communities currently using 334.

A press release from the Alabama Public Service Commission encouraged those in the 334 area code region to begin 10-digit dialing before the implementation.

"The permissive 10-digit dialing window will allow customers to become adjusted prior to mandatory 10-digit dialing, which will take effect Jan. 23, 2026," said the press release.

The press release went on to say that new customers, or those requesting an additional telephone line, can be assigned the new 483 code pending activation and that the implementation will not affect existing service for anyone in the 334 area code region.

The new code was approved on March 6, 2024, for the 334 area serving Selma, Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, Tuskegee, Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City, Eufaula, Dothan, Enterprise, Troy, Greenville and a "large" area of central and southeast Alabama.

911 and other three-digit numbers will not be affected.
