The historic 1914 Demopolis Public School or the "Old School" has received a $25,000 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation for the building to be renovated into the Old School Arts Center.

According to a press release from the Canebrake Players, a theater group housed in the Old School, the funds will be used to renovate the upstairs classroom to serve as an exhibit space for Marengo County History and Archives Museum.

Plans include the restoration of the original pine floors, repairing and painting plaster walls, and restoring the tongue and groove ceilings.

"The project is about more than restoration - it's about legacy," said Kirk Booker, President of the Friends of the Old School. "With the generous support of the Alabama Power Foundation, we are one step closer to revitalizing the historic place for arts, education and community engagement."

It is supported by multiple community organizations, including the Two Rivers Arts Council, the Marengo County Historical Society, the Marengo County History and Archives Museum, and Friends of the Old School in partnership with the City of Demopolis.
