The James Hood Detention Facility in Perry County has been shut down for repairs following the escape of an inmate who turned himself back in earlier this week.

According to WAKA, Sheriff Roy Fikes said that a hole was "knocked" into a wall when the escape took place. Other parts of the building were reportedly damaged as well.

Fikes said that the jail is not suitable to house inmates until repairs are finished. He has sent 15 inmates to jails in Cullman and Wilcox counties in the meantime.

An estimated date on when repairs will be completed was not given.

The inmate, Darren Brooks Jr., is a murder suspect who authorities believe is connected to the 2023 killing of Christopher Lewis during a robbery incident in Marion.
