Murder suspect Darren Brooks Jr., who escaped from Perry County Jail early Sunday morning, surrendered to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department without incident, District Attorney Robert H. Turner Jr. announced Monday morning.
Turner said Brooks, who was indicted on capital murder charges in connection with the January 2023 killing of Christopher Lewis during a robbery incident in Marion, will now receive an additional charge of escape in the second degree.
Turner thanked the Perry County Sheriff’s Department, Bibb County Sheriff’s Department, US Marshals Task Force, 4th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department, Selma Police Department and other agencies from across the state for “their professional, coordinated, and swift work that led to this safe outcome.”
Turner also thanked the Brooks and Lee families “for their part in helping convince their loved one to turn himself in. Their cooperation played a vital role in ensuring a peaceful surrender.”
“We are grateful for the seamless interagency cooperation and the role of the families in ensuring Mr. Brooks was taken into custody without incident,” Turner said. “Our office remains committed to public safety and to pursuing justice in this case.”
The 4th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office posted on social media Sunday afternoon urging citizens to be on high alert following the escape of Brooks from the Perry County Jail on Sunday at 12:42 a.m.
The office said in a statement that Brooks is considered armed and dangerous and recommends not approaching him. Instead, call 911 and immediately contact the Perry County Sheriff’s Office at (334) 683-6534.
Law enforcement asked those with doorbell cameras or business surveillance near jail access routes or in or around Marion to review footage from 12 a.m. – 2 a.m. and share relevant clips with law enforcement.
Brooks was indicted in Perry County on capital murder charges for the killing of Christopher Lewis, who died after being shot in a robbery on Jan. 6, 2023.
