A heat advisory is in effect for today and the public is advised to take precautions.

As temperatures rise the risk of heat stroke and exhaustion will increase as well. This image on the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency's Facebook page has several tips for staying safe.

Those who are working outside should stay hydrated and in a shady place when on break. Pets and children should never be left unattended inside of a vehicle.

The poor, elderly, sick and those without air conditioning should be regularly checked on. Outdoor activities should be limited.

Heat index values are reaching as high as 105 to 115, according to the National Weather Service Birmingham.
