Snow and winter stock

Freezing weather is anticipated to occur next week, meaning that scammers may take the opportunity to prey on citizens.

"Winter weather emergencies mean big bucks for scammers and unlicensed contractors," said Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey in a post on his Facebook page. "But if you pay them, they’ll take your money and disappear, charge you for things you don’t need, or leave before completing the work you paid them to do."

The public is advised to follow these tips:

Watch out for utility imposter scams: Utility imposters are known to show up after a storm or similar event claiming that they need to repair or replace equipment and then will ask for payment.

Only licensed and insured contractors: It is advised to ask contractors for proof of insurance and a written contract. The state and the county government can also confirm their license.

Don't pay in cash: Paying in credit may have some protections that cash does not. Residents are advised only to pay if after the work is done and to their satisfaction.
