The Selma Art Guild will hold its annual Summer Juried Art Exhibition on June 25 at the SAG gallery located at 508 Selma Ave.
The juror for this event will be noted artist Neal Brantley of Montgomery, and take-in dates for entries will be Friday and Saturday, June 16-17.
Take-in for art will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The reception on June 25 will be from 2-4 p.m. with award presentations at 3 p.m.
SAG President Cam Walker Guarino said she is looking forward to a successful show, and she is thankful “to have a very qualified juror in Neal Brantley.”
Awards will include $500 for Best of Show, $200 for Best in Category, $100 for Second in Category and $50 for Third in Category. Categories include transparent, opaque, photography, 3D and dry. Entry fees are $50 for one or two pieces, $60 for three pieces and $70 for four pieces. Works may be reclassified at the juror’s discretion.
Brantley took his first private painting lesson while he was in high school in 1966 from Troy University Art Professor Alice Thornton, who taught watercolor. His mother, Jane, was an artist for most of her life.
Brantley studied art at Auburn University and later received a BFA in painting from Tulane University in 1973. Some of his shows and awards are as follows:
Brantley’s work has been collected by residents of Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta and Tennessee. Some of his works are owned by the Retirement System of Alabama, Tulane University and the Louisiana State Museum.
All works included in the Summer Juried Art Exhibition will be for sale unless designated not for sale. The Selma Art Guild will receive a 20% commission on all sales.
Guarino said organized art in Selma goes back more than 100 years to the 1920s with the Selma Art League. She said the Selma Art Club began in the 1950s, and the Selma Art Guild was formed in 1972 by Hunter and Lorena Garth to “promote and encourage art.”
She said founding members included Rhea Smith, Dorothy Price, Leika Collins, Carolyn Bernstein and Evelyn Youngblood.
