A man from Selma has been sentenced to five years in prison for being part of a plan to smuggle two people from Yemen to the United States.Â
According to Fox 10 News, Salim Mohamed Yehya Alsahqani is a legal immigrant from Yemen who was accused and found guilty of smuggling two other Yemenis illegally across the California desert.Â
Alsahqani is said to have immigrated with his cousin to the U.S. and had run a gas station in Selma.
During his trial he pleaded guilty to money laundering and confessed to paying $15,270 to smuggle co-defendants Haidar Abo Ayedh Almuntaser and Mahmood Naji Saad Al Qamus.Â
Almuntaser reportedly pleaded guilty while Qamus and Alsahqani’s cousin, Nagi Nassar Alsahqani, are believed to be in Yemen.
In the trial there was also evidence presented of pictures of Alsahqani with firearms and was said to be involved in the sale of guns in Yemen, as well as in Selma.Â
Almuntaser is scheduled to be sentenced in November.Â
