Selma City Schools has put Selma High, Saints Virtual Academy and the alternative school on virtual classes for Monday after the shooting of a student over the weekend led to multiple shootings in the community.

Selma school officials said on Sunday those campuses will not meet in person on Monday at the recommendation of local law enforcement "in light of recent events affecting our community."

"Due to multiple shootings over the weekend involving juveniles, including one that left a teen seriously injured, the Selma City School District has decided to transition Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy/ Alternative Learning Center to virtual learning until the suspects are apprehended or until police presence is increased in our schools," the school said in a statement. "This decision comes out of concerns of possible retaliation. Our mission is to keep our scholars and staff safe at all times. Currently, local law enforcement is now investigating the incidents. No arrests have been made at this time."

The student who was shot has not been officially identified but those close to the family say he is in stable condition.

Selma City Police Lt. Ray Blanks told the Black Belt News Network and Selma Sun on Sunday night that he cannot give information until Chief Kenta Fulford returns to the office on Monday.

Blanks said there were multiple shootings over the weekend but did not give specifics including whether anyone else was injured. Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas said the first shooting that injured the Selma High student happened Friday night on Marie Foster.

"Please know that the safety and security of our scholars and staff are of utmost importance to Selma City Schools," the statement made on social media says.

Selma High School and Saints Virtual Academy along with the Alternative School students should log on to their IXL accounts for posted assignments, the district said.
