A Selma High School graduate has been accepted into a program to study literature in South Africa.
JaKyra Phillips, a master’s student in creating writing at the University of North Alabama, has been accepted to attend a two-week program to study South African literature in Cape Town and she is asking for some help to get there.
“Between a grueling master’s program, a part-time job and editing gigs, I will still need some assistance,” Phillips said. “My overall goal is $5,000, which will cover the program, tuition and other associated expenses.”
“One of my biggest motivations for studying abroad is to experience it firsthand,” Phillips said. “I want to see the world beyond what I know — little ole’ Selma, Alabama.”
Phillips said, “Studying in Cape Town will begin to fulfill the growing pull that I feel toward Africa, as well as familiarize myself with the environment and practices.”
“My background in creative writing has trained me to analyze and appreciate narratives from different cultural lenses, while my passion for exploration drives me to seek out perspectives beyond my own,” Phillips said. “Studying abroad will allow me to fulfill those aspirations, as well as prepare to create literature that is more globally aware and deeply resonant.”
Donations can be made on GoFundMe, Venmo and Zelle. Phillips can be reached phillipsjakyra@yahoo.com or (334) 413-1824.
