Selma Housing Authority has received a $2.3 million grant to start a Jobs Plus office and boost workforce participation of residents at two housing developments.

The funds will be used to hire six employees to staff the office, including a director, with efforts focused on helping residents in the George Washington Carver and Felix Heights communities, said Kennard Randolph, executive director.

SHA and other leaders gathered at SHA’s office on Washington Street on Tuesday to celebrate the grant and put out the word for a director as well as caseworkers to help build out the program with a goal of starting in October, Randolph said.

“It’s all about workforce development. It’s all about helping our families to become self-sufficient,” said Randolph. "We are not just about housing families, we are about changing lives. This grant will help out with childcare, job placement, on-the-job training, transportation and so much more. We are looking to launch sometime in October, so we are looking to fill positions now. If you’re looking for a great place to work, Selma Housing Authority is the place for you.”

Regional Administrator for HUD, Jennifer Collins, presented SHA with the $2.3 million check from the federal program, Jobs Plus.

“I hope that I need no introductions to Selma,” she said. “Selma is a place that is near and dear to my heart. I brought my sons here when they were young and shared with them the rich and varied history of our Southern soil,” she shared. “HUD has invested $325 million through its initiatives, $30 million to public housing agencies for jobs, economic mobility and improving employment outlook. $3.9 million went to the state of Alabama.”

We caught up with COO Cicely Curtis, in charge of getting the staff hired, along with Mel Harrison in Human Resources.

“There are six positions that come along with the Jobs Plus grant,” she said. “This includes a director, case managers, a coach. So if that’s you, please feel free to go to our website to apply or call us if you have questions or concerns. We are here. And you just might be the right person. So come on aboard. We are building a culture of work-readiness for our residents, and we are super excited. There is opportunity for all. The possibilities are limitless.”

Curtis said they are working to build a “culture of work” at the housing communities.

“This will provide incentives for our workable residents at Felix Heights and GWC and build a culture of work for our families,” she said.

Curtis said to apply, visit their website at selmahousing.com or call with questions at 334-419-0941.
