Selma officials seek 'person of interest' in Walmart fire

Selma Fire Department crews were called to the Walmart at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The store is closed as it deals with smoke and water damage. A fire on Sept. 30 closed the store for two days.

Public safety officials are looking for a “person of interest” in connection to the Sunday evening fire at the Selma Walmart, according to Selma Fire Chief Franklin Edwards.

“There was a fire set inside of Walmart, and we are working it,” Edward said. “We have a person of interest, and we’re exhausting all avenues to locate and talk to the individual.”

“There’s not much I can say right now,” Edwards said. “We’re still investigating.” The Chief said a press conference will be held possibly as soon as Wednesday to provide details on the fire.

Edwards said they cannot determine for sure, but there is no indication that this fire is connected to the previous fire set in the store on Sept. 30. A fire was set in the craft section of the store caused minor damage and closed the store for several days in early October.

County Commissioner Vivian Rogers, who works for Walmart, said the store should reopen Thursday. She said there was damage in several parts of the store, including men’s wear and children’s departments.

Selma Fire Department was called to the store on Highland Avenue at around 5:45 p.m. Sunday. There were no injuries in Sunday's fire, but the store is closed again due to smoke and water from the store's fire sprinklers, which put out the fire without needing firefighters' hoses.

The Selma Sun will update this report as more information is obtained.
