Selma Police are asking for help finding a suspect in a murder that occurred Thursday.

Selma police responded to a call in the 1800 block of Hinson Alley around 8:30 p.m. to find the victim, Steve Kennedy of Selma, dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Police Chief Kenta Fulford.

Fulford said Kennedy was in his 30s. Fulford said the investigation indicates the victim ran from GWC Homes across the street to St. Ann Street in the Hinson Alley area

“We’re asking anybody who was in the area of GWC who might have seen something or heard something to reach out to us, Fulford said.

Fulford asks anyone with information to call 334-876-1259 or call Crimestoppers at 334-215 STOP (7867).

Earlier that same evening, a shooting incident occurred in the 1500 block of Lagrand Street that included mayoral candidate Aaron Roper. Fulford said he is not sure if the two incidents are connected.

“They were in two different locations, so we’re not sure if they are tied in or not,” Fulford said.

Roper said as he was campaigning for Selma mayor, he was speaking to some residents who were standing outside the garage of their home. As they talked, at least three people came from around a building across the street and opened fire on them.

The residents and Roper took cover behind a car, and when the shooting stopped, they ran into the home. Roper reported no one was hit by any bullets.

Roper said he does not believe he was the targetIt seemed it was a retaliation shooting between two families. Fulford, Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum and District Attorney Robert Turner Jr. have all said in previous interviews that retaliatory shootings are a problem in our area.

Fulford said anyone with information about either incident should call 334-876-1259 or call Crimestoppers at 334-215 STOP (7867).
