Selma recognized as Main Street Alabama Designated Community by Ivey

Selma was recognized by Gov. Kay Ivey as a Main Street Alabama Designated Community during a proclamation ceremony held on July 16. 

"Selma holds an extraordinary place in Alabama's history, and its people are working together to build an equally promising future," said Ivey. "This Main Street Alabama designation reflects Selma's commitment to preserving its historic character, strengthening local businesses and creating a vibrant downtown for residents and visitors. I am proud to recognize this achievement and the community partnership that made it possible."

According to a press release the program will help Selma focus on the following: 

1. Economic vitality, including support for existing businesses, entrepreneurship and new investment.
2. Design, including historic preservation, attractive public spaces and improvements to the downtown environment.
3. Promotion, including events, marketing and efforts to strengthen downtown Selma's identity.
4. Organization, including partnerships, volunteer engagement and sustainable local leadership.

"Initial" attention will be given to Water Avenue and Old Town historic districts in which Main street will help local leaders with board development, goal setting, work planning, market analysis, economic-development strategies, targeted design assistance and district-development training.

Coordinating with the program will be the Selma Redevelopment Authority to establish volunteer committees.

"Achieving Main Street designation is an important milestone, but it is also the beginning of a long-term, community-driven process," said Sarah Aghedo, executive director of the Selma Redevelopment Authority and Main Street Selma coordinator.

"The program gives Selma a clear framework for strengthening downtown while protecting the historic assets and local character that make our city unique. We are grateful to Governor Ivey, Main Street Alabama, and everyone who contributed to this effort."
