The city of Selma is ready to advertise for a garbage contractor.
The Selma City Council approved a 20-page request for proposal seeking a company to handle the city’s residential and commercial waste collection services at their April 14 meeting. The new contract has been in the works since early this year.
The contract will be for two years, and the city will have the option to extend it for up to three additional one-year periods.
Martin Environmental currently provides solid waste services to Selma without a contract.
All bidders must have experience servicing a city with 4,000 to 6,000 households and at least 100 front-load dumpsters, according to the request for proposal. The contractor will provide curbside service weekly, as well as back door service for customers who can prove they need such service. The contractor will also serve commercial customers.
Bids will be rated on qualifications, soundness of approach, efficiency, integrity, adaptability, customer focus and cost to residents.
In other business, the city council received a list of properties in three wards that are to be declared unsafe public nuisances. The list includes more than 150 dilapidated properties in Ward 6, 39 in Ward 5 and 46 in Ward 8. The property owners will be contacted to bring the building up to code or the city will push down the structure and place a lien on the property.
The Selma Redevelopment Authority asked the city council to allow them to apply to be a full member of the Main Street Alabama Program. The statewide program helps cities revitalize their downtown business districts. Selma was the first city in the state to have a Main Street program in 1983, but their membership lapsed. Selma is now an Aspiring Community member of the Main Street organization.
The city council will consider a resolution giving Tres Taylor Works on Tarpaper organization permission to clean up Byrd School at their next meeting.
