A Selma woman was shot in the neck on Monday, and police suspect the shooter was her boyfriend, who later killed himself in Perry County.
Selma police responded to a call about a shooting at Dallas County Road 44 around 7:30 a.m. Monday and found a 36-year-old woman, who has not been identified, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. She was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where she is being treated.
Police say the suspect is Raymond Averett of Faunsdale, her boyfriend.
Perry County Sheriff Billy Jones said Monday morning his department responded to a call on Ocmulgee Church Road, just over the Dallas County line in Perry County, and found a victim with a self-inflected gunshot wound to the head.
Jones reported it was a suicide and added, “We found out it was related to the shooting of his girlfriend this morning in Selma.” Jones also said Averett’s parents came to the scene.
So far no word on a motive for the incident. Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum said Averett had a criminal record and was released from jail within the last few weeks.
