The Selma Redevelopment Authority Board of Directors has a new chairman and an executive director.

Meeting for the first time in 2025 on Feb. 13 at City Blocks, the Selma Redevelopment Authority Board of Directors elected new officers including a new chairman, Dr. Rose Wilkins; vice chairman, Martha Lockett; secretary, Clay Carmichael; and treasurer, Sylvia Smith.

Wilkins replaces Lockett, who served as chairman since reorganization of the SRA in September of 2022.

Wilkins said of her election, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as chairman of the SRA Board. I think that the work that has been done is remarkable, and the work that will be completed in the future is going to be remarkable because of all the plans and all of the needs in historical downtown.”

She said redevelopment is a “personal goal” of hers. “It gives us an opportunity to reboot or rebuild some things,” Wilkins said.

SRA will work on a strategic plan that will include other organizations “so that we will have a nice footprint going forward, but it won’t just be a single footprint but footprints,” Wilkins said.

The Feb. 13 meeting was a combination of January and February meetings because the SRA failed to have a quorum in January.

SRA Executive Director Sarah Aghedo, who was hired by the SRA on Dec. 16, 2024, presented a report of her activities since her employment.

The SRA discussed possible façade enhancement grants projects. It approved sponsorship for printing in the amount of $500 for Randy Nkonoki for his Selma Events Booklet to go to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, as well as a donation of $750 to the Selma Art Guild in return for use of its building for meetings for 18 months rent free. The 300 booklets going to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will include the SRA label.

Wilkins, Lockett, Carmichael, Smith and Aghedo attended the meeting. The next meeting of the SRA is set for March 20.
