Rep. Terri Sewell and other Democrats in Congress have renewed their efforts in pushing for four voting rights bills, including the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act or VRAA.Â
According to Democracy Docket, Congressional Democrats held an announcement on Tuesday at the U.S. Capitol where they declared their intention to fight for the bills.
In addition to VRAA, the others are the the Freedom to Vote Act, the Native American Voting Rights Act and a DC Statehood bill.Â
“Never did I think that the cause for which they fought almost 60 years ago would become our cause, too," Sewell said. "Didn’t we win that fight? Didn’t we get the Voting Rights Act of 1965? But, it goes to show you that progress is elusive, and every generation has to hold on to the progress that we made and try to advance it."
The VRAA would supposedly restore preclearance requirements in Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act that were taken out by the U.S. Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder.Â
Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her support for VRAA in her speech at the Democratic National Convention during her presidential campaign.Â
