Rep. Terri Sewell released a statement on Monday, Jan. 6 remarking on the fourth year since the riot at the U.S. Capitol during a session to verify the results of the 2020 election.
On Monday congress gathered at the U.S. Capitol to verify the results of the 2024 election in which President Donald Trump won and will return to office on Jan. 20. The verification took place without incident.
See below for Sewell's statement and brief recounting of the event from 2020:
“The horrors of January 6, 2021 will be seared in my memory forever. I will always remember the feeling of terror and the thunderous sound of the mob as my colleagues and I laid trapped in the House Gallery. While the rioters sought to overturn the 2020 election results, they failed, thanks in no small part to the bravery and heroism of the law enforcement officials who sprang into action. Today, we pay special tribute to the more than 140 officers who were injured, and we honor those who lost their lives defending our democratic ideals."
“As Americans, we should never forget the events of January 6th. And as elected leaders, we should always remember that our loyalty is to the Constitution, not to any one person or party. Our elections are sacred, and for our democracy to work, we must always respect the outcome, even when we disagree. It is in that spirit that today, unlike four years ago, we came together to peacefully certify the results of the 2024 presidential election and uphold the will of the American people.”
