Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) has released a statement about a recent federal district court ruling that supported the court-ordered congressional map after determining that a past map reportedly discriminated against black voters.

When the new map was implemented Democratic candidate Shomari Figures was elected and represents an area that includes communities in the Black Belt.

But according to media reports litigation was filed afterwards and brought the case back to court. With the ruling backing up the new district map Sewell applauded the decision.

See below for her statement:

“In yet another victory for fair representation, a federal court has once again ruled unequivocally that the State of Alabama’s 2023 congressional map illegally dilutes the power of African American voters. Despite the state’s years-long legal battle to undo our progress, this ruling ensures that Black voters in Alabama will continue to have not one but two congressional districts where we can elect a candidate of our choice.

“Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act is indeed alive and enforceable!”
