Whitfield, Vaughan Signs

Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma and Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis have been recognized for preventing a common but potentially serious infection.

National publication Becker Hospital Review noted that Vaughan and Whitfield reported zero catheter-associated urinary tract infections from July 2024 to June 2025.

Of the approximately 5,300 U.S. hospitals, only 508, including seven in Alabama, reported zero catheter-associated urinary tract infections . The data is reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

A urinary catheter is often necessary for hospitalized patients, but they also carry a significant risk of infection and other complications, especially for patients who are elderly or have other health complications, according to a statement from Whitfield.
