Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC) in Selma has been designated a Level III Trauma Center and a Level III Stroke Center by the Alabama Trauma and Health System (ATHS).
According to a press release from VRMC the Level III Trauma Center designation signifies that the hospital provides immediate trauma evaluation and rapid surgical availability
by a dedicated trauma team, an organized trauma program, and physicians trained in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). It also signifies that these services are covered 24/7.
The Level III Stroke Center designation signifies that VRMC provides emergency physician coverage, immediate CT imaging, and "timely" treatment for ischemic stroke, including evaluation and possible administration of tPA, as well as neurology support that includes structured transfer pathways for patients who require advanced neurointerventional or neurosurgical care.
This is also provided 24/7, said the press release, which stated that residents in Selma and surrounding areas have "faster" access to these services.
“This achievement reflects the commitment and expertise of our clinical teams,” said
VRMC CEO Michael James. “Being recognized as both a Level III Trauma Center and a Level III Stroke Center means our community can count on us for timely, lifesaving care when every second matters. I’m incredibly proud of the work our physicians, nurses, and staff have done to reach these milestones.”
