West Alabama Transportation has received a new van to transport Perry County citizens, said an announcement from Commissioner Albert Turner Jr.Â
Turner said that the process of getting the van through the Department of Transportation 5311 program took two years. The previous vehicles were "outdated" and lacking in air condition.Â
The county matched $15,000 to purchase it after the COVID pandemic caused delays.Â
"The support for the rural transportation system is through the [federal government] at a rate of 97% of its revenue coming from the federal government," Turner said. "Riders pay a minimal fee to ride the van service to perform daily chores like riding to grocery stores, drug stores, doctor appointments, and the like."
