Fred was a 1956 graduate and starting quarterback from Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia. He spent one semester at Columbus College, where he was an outfielder for the college’s baseball team; he then enlisted in the ranks of the U.S. Air Force to be educated in drafting and stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He also served in post-war Korea. In 1960, he received an honorable discharge from the USAF.
He returned home to civilian life in Phenix City, Alabama, and married the love of his life Betty Sue Parker (deceased at 80 years of age, August 9, 2019), then relocated to Ft. Smith, Arkansas where they had their only son “Ty” (1968). In 1972, the family relocated to Asheville, North Carolina where he became a Sales Representative for Donahue Sales out of New York. He then relocated to Greenville, South Carolina in 1973, and again to Tampa, Florida in 1975 on behalf of Donahue. Based in Oldsmar, “Fred” was a traveling representative for various wholesale companies, when he finally retired in 2002 back to “Sweet Home, Alabama.” Fred spent his golden years eating Alabama BBQ ribs and watching the Florida Gators in SEC college football.
As a devout Freewill Baptist Christian, he was a loving husband to his wife and a deeply caring father to his son – and also his two surviving grandchildren: Alexander Frederick and Cecilia Violeta of Louisiana.
