The Morgan Academy Senators varsity baseball team swept area opponent Clarke Prep 7-6 and 11-0 in a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, April 12 to claim the area championship.
The Senators are in AISA Class AAA Region 2, Area 1, which includes Clarke Prep, Fort Dale and Monroe. And the wins Tuesday improved the Senators to 18-7 overall, 8-1 in area play.
Morgan Academy varsity head baseball coach Stephen Clements said the Senators only had to get one win on Tuesday for the area title.
The Senators defeated the visiting Gators 7-6 in game one, sealing the area title on a T.B. Clements single to score one run in the bottom of the ninth inning of a game that was tied at 6-all.
Both offenses were strong at the plate as Morgan Academy collected four hits and Clarke Prep 10 in the high-scoring affair.
Davis Vardaman got thing started drawing a walk, scoring one run for the Senators in the first inning. But in the top of the seventh inning, Clarke Prep tied things up at 6-all.
Andrew Thomas pitched the Senators to victory lasting nine innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs while striking out eight and walking one.
Clements led Morgan Academy with two hits in five at bats.
Hayden Roberts threw a gem of a game in game two of the doubleheader to shut out the Gators allowing zero runs on the way to an 11-0 victory.
The Senators scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Vardaman, John Allen Ingram, Clay Beers, Matthew Hand, Cade Henderson and Thomas each had RBIs in the frame.
Roberts got the win for Morgan Academy allowing one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out seven.
Henderson, Beers, and C.J. Crocker each collected one hit to lead Morgan Academy. Crocker led Morgan Academy with two stolen bases, as the Senators ran wild with six stolen bases.
Clements said he was “Super proud” of his team for “the way we fought tonight.”
He said, “We overcame a lot of adversity and just kept competing. Andrew Thomas just kept battling over and over, and we just kept chipping away at the plate.”
Clements said Beers had a huge sacrifice fly in the sixth inning of game one and numerous other players did little things to compete with Clements coming through in the ninth for the walk off.
