The Morgan Senators saw their basketball season come to an end at the AISA Elite 8 Basketball Tournament at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at the hands of the Lee-Scott Academy Warriors 61-41.
Under the leadership of second year head varsity boys basketball coach Luke Hutcheson, the Senators ended the year with an 8-8 overall record and 5-1 in area play.
“I’m proud of the way my guys competed until the end,” Hutcheson said following Tuesday’s contest. “It’s been a tough year for everyone with COVID and game cancellations. But, as a young team, I look forward to us coming back stronger next year.” He said, “Very proud of my group of seniors and will miss them.”
Against Lee-Scott, the Senators were led by sophomore Rhyne Williams with 18 points and senior Chris Gardner with 11 points.
Hutcheson said Gardner and George Turner did a great job as seniors and sophomore Williams and juniors Wilks Chittom and Cink Minter played well as underclassmen and helped carry the team all season.
The Morgan Academy varsity boys basketball ended the 20-21 regular basketball season at home on Tuesday, Jan. 19 with a 60-41 victory over Clarke Prep and nabbing the number one seed in the AISA Class AAA Elite 8 Basketball Tournament. However, the team was able to get an extra game in before the Elite 8 on Feb. 4 when they defeated Patrician Academy 70-57 on the road.
When asked if the long break between the final game of the regular season and the Elite 8 except for extra game with Patrician hurt, Hutcheson said, “I would say it definitely did not help us out. It’s always good to play as many games as possible in basketball, and this year, we weren’t able to get that with COVID. And I hate that for our seniors."
Senior Senators included Gardner, Clayton O’Shields, Turner, Evan Eskridge and Brody Roberts.
Other members of the Senators this season were juniors Wade Mason, Andrew Thomas, Andrew Morris and Davis Vardaman and sophomores Cole Wilson, Teddy Henry, Alan Michael Creech, John Beekman Youngblood and T.B. Clements.
