The Brenham Cubs continued their winning ways on Tuesday night thanks to the performance of senior forward Jayden Hebert.
Hebert scored 28 points in Brenham’s 56-33 District 17-5A win at A&M Consolidated.
The Cubs (20-10, 6-3 district) won their sixth consecutive game, good for their longest win streak of the season, and remained one game behind Huntsville in the district title race. Brenham moved into a tie for third with the Tigers and pushed its advantage over fifth-place Montgomery to 2.5 games with three games to play.
Brenham also secured its 20th win for a third consecutive season, encompassing the entire tenure of third-year Cub coach Colby Andrews.
Hebert got his night started with four first-quarter baskets. Senior guard Chris Guidry also scored eight first-quarter points with two 3-pointers, giving the Cubs a 16-12 lead after the first eight minutes.
Brenham pushed its lead to 10 points at 27-17 by halftime. Hebert scored three more baskets and got assistance from junior guard Quincy Adams, who scored his first five points of the game in the second quarter.
Hebert scored four more baskets in the third period to power a 17-point quarter, good for Brenham’s highest-scoring quarter of the game. Junior guard Dawud Majied added five of his seven points in the quarter while Adams and junior forward Roderick Martin scored two points each in the third.
Hebert completed its 28-point game with three more baskets in the final period. Adams and Majied added baskets to complete a 12-point period.
The Cubs’ defense allowed just 15 points in the second half to complete its 33-point defensive performance. Brenham allowed its second-fewest points in a district game this year while allowing 52 fewer points to the Tigers than the teams’ first meet on Jan. 9, which A&M Consolidated won 85-75.
Adams’ total of nine points was Brenham’s second-highest mark. Guidry’s eight first-quarter points were his only points while Majied tallied seven points.
Brenham will get its chance to clinch a playoff spot at 6:30 p.m. on Friday against Rudder at Brenham High School. The Cubs only need to defeat the Rangers on their senior night to clinch their third consecutive postseason berth.
