A leading candidate for Mizzou's open offensive coordinator job has reportedly emerged.Â
Per CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is in Mizzou's sights to replace outgoing OC Kirby Moore, who took the vacant head coaching position at Washington State earlier this month.Â
Lindsey has been an offensive coordinator at several stops. He was at Southern Miss from 2014 to 2015, Arizona State in 2016, Auburn from 2017 to 2018, UCF in 2022, North Carolina from 2023 to 2024 and Michigan this past season. He was also the head coach at Troy from 2019 to 2021.Â
A few days ago, MU coach Eli Drinkwitz talked about what he desires out of an offensive coordinator. Lindsey seems to fit the criteria.Â
"This league doesn't allow for training wheels," Drinkwitz said on Tuesday. "There's not a lot of first-time play-callers having a lot of success in (the SEC). You've got to have some battle scars. You've got to have a level of toughness. You've got to have an understanding of who you are, what your identity is. That's going to be a priority.
"I've had a lot of people reach out and recommend a lot of people that are great candidates and great people, but it's going to be somebody who I feel like has been in the fire before and understands it and knows what they're getting into."
Drinkwitz said he doesn't know who will call plays against Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 27.Â
This season, Michigan averaged 27.6 points per game, which ranked No. 11 in the Big Ten. Despite having quarterback Bryce Underwood, one of the most highly touted freshman quarterbacks in recent memory, the Wolverines leaned on their run game often, as two running backs (Jordan Marshall and Justice Haynes) rushed for more than 800 yards each. They also had 10 touchdowns apiece.Â
Michigan will play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 2:00 p.m. in Orlando, Florida.Â
