Clemson Riley's Offense Football

Then-SMU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley watches players practice prior to playing Tulane during an NCAA college football game in Dallas, Thursday, Oct. 22, 2021. Riley's offense in his first season at Clemson eventually kicked in, but far too late to make the Tigers championship contenders last season. Riley is focused on a faster, crisper start in year two.

Missouri has decided to hire former Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley to its staff, On3’s Pete Nakos reported Friday. He will serve as an offensive assistant, with his exact role to be determined.

The 36-year-old joins the Tigers after various coaching stints at Clemson, TCU, SMU, Appalachian State, Kansas and East Carolina.

Riley spent the 2015 season as the outside receivers coach at East Carolina, where he coached Zay Jones, who was selected 37th in the 2017 NFL Draft. At East Carolina, Riley worked with his brother, current USC head coach Lincoln Riley.

Riley worked at Kansas for three years after being hired as an offensive analyst in 2016. He then shifted to coaching the quarterbacks in 2017 and mentoring the tight ends and fullbacks in 2018. He spent a year as the running backs coach at Appalachian State in 2019 before working as the offensive coordinator at SMU from 2020-21.

Riley worked with quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Max Duggan at TCU as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022.

During that 2022 campaign, he helped the Horned Frogs achieve a 13-2 record and a berth in the CFP National Championship. He elevated TCU from No. 65 in scoring offense in 2021 to No. 9 in 2022. Riley’s accomplishments won him the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant in college football.

Most recently, Riley spent three seasons as Clemson’s offensive coordinator. He was fired after the 2025 season, which saw Clemson go 7-6 and miss both the ACC Championship and College Football Playoff.

Before that, Riley found success there, working with and developing quarterback Cade Klubnik throughout the team’s playoff run in 2024.

Riley will now head to Columbia and reunite with Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz. Drinkwitz hired Riley to Appalachian State’s staff as a running backs coach when Drinkwitz was the head coach in 2019. They spent one season together before both leaving Boone, North Carolina.

Garrett earned a bachelor's degree in general business from Texas Tech in 2012, and he played quarterback for the Red Raiders from 2008-09. During those two seasons, the Red Raiders logged 20 wins and back-to-back bowl appearances under coach Mike Leach. Riley then transferred to Stephen F. Austin in 2010.

Mizzou hires Goode as Director of College Scouting

Missouri is also hiring Roman Goode as director of college scouting, Power Mizzou reported on X.

Goode previously spent two years in the same role at Georgia Tech.

Before starting with the Yellow Jackets, he worked in the recruiting departments at Tennessee and Alabama. With the Volunteers, he served as a personnel and recruiting analyst, and with the Crimson Tide, he served as a recruitment specialist. He was at Tennessee from 2022-24 and Alabama from 2019-22.
