Selma native and businessman Clay Carmichael has announced he is running for the Selma City Council in Ward 3.

Carmichael is plant manager at Cosby-Carmichael Ready Mix Concrete, Sand & Gravel in Selma. He is a 1999 graduate of Morgan Academy and one of the founders of Blackbelt Benefit Group, a nonprofit started in the last decade by young people in Selma to raise money for needs in Dallas County.

The Ward 3 seat has been served by Miah Jackson, who is running for mayor of Selma. There are no other candidates announced for that seat yet. The primary election for the Selma City Council seats and mayor position will be in August.

In his announcement on Facebook, Carmichael, 39, said, “I grew up walking to school, riding bikes, and playing backyard ball in this neighborhood, learning to pick up trash and cut grass for my elder neighbors at a young age. Although I moved away for a time, my heart has never left this neighborhood. It has always been my home. As a Selma City Councilman, I promise to work hard for Ward 3 every day, find solutions to difficult problems and make improvements where we can.”
