Selma is joining other Alabama municipalities in becoming a “Smart City” with 1G wireless internet in downtown Selma, Mayor Darrio Melton announced Monday.

“In the 21st century, a competitive and sustainable broadband industry is driving innovation, community and economic development, education, health care, and government services,” Melton said in a release. “As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is a mandate for the City of Selma to provide local residents broadband internet access.”

Downtown Wi-Fi will not be the only development, the release stated, but is “the first of many technological advances taking place in historic Selma.”

“Mayor Melton’s Smart City Initiative includes expanding the City of Selma digital footprint,” said IT Director Bessie Curtis. “It is exciting to help build out the technological vision the mayor has for the city.”

According to the press release, Selma is the only Alabama city that owns its own broadband facility. In 2009 a bond issue allowed the city to install 72 strands of fiber that circumferences 22 miles around Selma.

Melton said that he wants Selma to be a technologically innovated city in addition to being historically significant due to its role in the Civil Rights era.
