Song of Selma Park

SABRA Sanctuary will host its annual Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5:30 p.m. at Songs of Selma Park in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The community is invited to attend the event at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which honors survivors of domestic violence, remembers those who have lost their lives to abuse and raises awareness about the importance of helping individuals and families escape dangerous relationships.

SABRA Sanctuary serves victims of domestic violence in Dallas, Greene, Sumter, Wilcox and Marengo counties, providing emergency shelter, advocacy and support to help survivors find safety and begin rebuilding their lives.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed nationally each October to bring attention to domestic abuse, encourage prevention and connect survivors with resources that can help them escape abusive situations.

For women and children in rural communities, leaving an abusive relationship can be especially difficult because of limited access to emergency housing, transportation and financial resources. Organizations such as SABRA Sanctuary play an important role in helping survivors find safety and support.

The annual candlelight vigil offers an opportunity for residents, community leaders, advocates and families to come together in remembrance, support and solidarity.

If you know someone in crisis, the SABRA crisis line number is (334) 874- 8711 or 1-800-650-6522. The office number is (334) 877-4645.
