The City of Selma is encouraging the public to wear purple on Oct. 19 as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime," said a post on the city's Facebook page.

"There are many forms of domestic abuse which can be verbal, emotional and/or physical and it’s important to understand how these behaviors interact so that you know where to ask for help."

People are encouraged to wear purple clothes and/or ribbons in support of those who have experienced domestic abuse.
