It was Thankful Tuesday at Edgewood Elementary School on Nov. 19.

The school was celebrating American Education Week, so teachers, Ms. Pope and Ms. Childs, sponsored "Heroes Behind the Scenes" to read to the students in hopes of building stronger relationships between the school and families. The students had a blast with firefighters, law enforcement agents, community leaders and parents.

The reading sessions were filled with laughter, imagination and lessons. Two of the classes made a song out of some of the words from the book, "Pete the Cat."

"My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons," they sang. And laughed. This book also included simple math problems that the students were permitted to chant aloud as the story went along.

Firefighters were in another classroom giving lessons on safety and the inner workings of and the rankings within the department.

"If you work hard, you can make your way through the rankings, too," said Terrence Venter, a lieutenant on the force.

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
