Darryl Aikerson, interim superintendent for Selma City Schools

Selma City Schools has a new interim superintendent who takes over leadership of the district on Oct. 1.

Darryl Aikerson, a veteran educator, was named by the Selma school board in a recent meeting to take over leadership for Dr. Zickeyous Byrd, whose last day is Sept. 30.

Aikerson retired as superintendent of Tuscumbia City Schools in 2021, where he served for nine years. He also worked as director of federal programs for 21 years in the Bessemer City School system.

Aikerson got a bachelor’s degree in education from Alcorn State and a master’s from Alabama A&M and UAB. He is a Birmingham native and graduate of Jess Lanier High.
