Selma City Schools is looking for a new superintendent.
Dr. Zickeyous Byrd, who has served as superintendent for two years, told the Selma City School Board on Wednesday that he will be taking retirement and the board approved the request. The retirement will be effective Oct. 1 and he said he will assist with the transition until his last day on Sept. 30.
Byrd has more than 25 years of service at Alabama schools. In a statement, Selma City Schools said, "Under his leadership, the Selma district has seen significant improvements in academic performance, infrastructure, and community engagement."
The district noted the transformation and renovations of school facilities, the introduction of new extracurricular activities to "ensure every scholar has the opportunity to participate."
Byrd enhanced safety and security by hiring and training School Resource Officers that joined the district in recent weeks, and providing additional training for security officers.
The statement said he fostered "greater transparency and trust with our stakeholders and employees."
"His commitment to excellence in education and unwavering dedication to the mission of Selma City Schools have left an indelible mark on the district," the statement said.
Byrd expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Selma community.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together. The success and growth of our students have always been my top priority, and I am confident that Selma City Schools will continue to thrive under the capable hands of our dedicated educators and staff,” said Byrd.
Superintendent Byrd said he looks forward to the next chapter of his life, filled with personal interests and time spent with family. “I am excited about what the future holds and look forward to God’s next chapter for my life. In the meantime, I am eager to enjoy some relaxation. I will always cherish the memories and achievements we have accomplished together,” he added.
Byrd stated he will "remain deeply committed and dedicated to the district’s mission and vision and will work diligently to continue the work" until his last official day of Sept. 30 and will "work closely with the Board to ensure a smooth and effective transition."
