The recount of the votes in the Perry County Commission District 1 primary race has been set for July 9.

Perry County Democratic Party Chairman and Probate Judge Carlton Hogue said the recount will be at 11 a.m. in the main courtroom of the Perry County Courthouse.

The recount was ordered by the Alabama Democratic Party Executive Committee in late June after the May 19 primary race was determined by only one vote, with challenger Donald Bennett being named the winner over longtime incumbent Albert Turner Jr.

Turner asked for the recount and was told to pay $8,500 to cover the county’s cost for the process.

On July 3, Turner personally delivered the check to Hogue, who deposited it in the bank July 6. Once the check cleared the bank, the date and time for the recount was set.

The Democratic committee gave Turner 48 hours from the time he was served the recount amount letter to pay the funds or there would be no recount.

The race was tight on primary election day, then after all of the provisional ballots from the Primary were counted, the election was certified on May 26 saying Bennett beat Turner by one vote. Turner challenged that outcome by submitting a request for a recount to the Alabama Democrat Committee in Montgomery.

A hearing by the committee was held June 15 where question arose as to whether or not Turner submitted his request within the 24-hour time limit and if he sent it to the correct person in the correct office.
