New details about the stunning ouster of MobLand lead Tom Hardy from his role in the show’s third season have now been revealed.
The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that a source claims Hardy’s “fate is yet to be decided,” detailed some of the clashes that occurred on the set of the Paramount+ crime drama’s second season, which recently completed production.
According to the trade, Hardy butted heads with several creatives: executive producer Jez Butterworth and those at the production company, David Glasser’s 101 studios.
A source told The Hollywood Reporter that Hardy refused to leave his trailer for hours as a “power play,” which meant other A-list stars of the show, including Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, were left to wait for him. The source described the move as “career suicide.”
Matthew Belloni at Puck News was the first site to report that Hardy would not be asked to return for MobLand Season 3 as a result of his on-set behavior during Season 2’s production. Puck’s report claimed that the actor offered unsolicited script notes and arrived late to set. The site also reported he was unsatisfied with being part of an ensemble cast in the series, and his antics were so upsetting that Butterworth even threatened to quit the show as a result of them.
Paramount+ has not officially renewed MobLand for Season 3, but THR reports that if it is given the greenlight, it will begin filming in September of this year.
In the series’ first (and, it seems, second) season, Hardy stars as Harry De Souza, the leading fixer for the Harrigan crime family, headed by Conrad (Brosnan) and Maeve (Mirren), along with their various children. The second season is expected to expand the worldview of the series beyond the original family feud with the rival Stevensons, a war which was won in great part due to De Souza’s actions.
Returning for Season 2 alongside Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren are Paddy Considine as Kevin, Anson Boon as Eddie, Mandeep Dhillon as Seraphina, Joanne Froggatt as Jan, Jasmine Jobson as Zosia, Lara Pulver as Kevin’s wife Bella, Janet McTeer as Kat Mc Allister, Alex Fine as Donnie, Jordi Mollà as Jaime Lopez, and Toby Jones as Colin Tattersall. The second season will also feature the introduction of new characters portrayed by Johnny Flynn and Ophelia Lovibond.
